The legend says the technique nowadays used by the artisans of Usiacurí to weave with iraca palm comes from 1905, when a German passerby left a steel wire chest covered with thread. Goyita Barros, the artisan who found the chest, tried to recreate it using iraca palm without knowing she was creating the craft that will make famous Usiacurí. In this magical town from the atlantic region of Colombia is where this journey called Mercedes Salazar Home begins.
Each design is handmade by master artisans not only in Usiacurí, but also in Guacamayas, Boyacá, from hand-sculpted bronze, iraca palm, wérregue and in some cases thread.
